I’ve written several posts about the Archos 101, my latest Android toy. However, I now have some concerns about this new tablet and frequent power issues. I originally purchased the Archos 101 in December and received it just before Christmas. For the first few weeks the device ran great, until January 27th (the day before my birthday) when the tablet would not power up. It did not respond to any of the buttons and the led did not light up when I plugged it in to charge.

Install Google Market on Archos 101
Installing Google Market on the Archos 101 is a relatively quick and easy task which I highly recommend doing as soon as you get the Archos 101 tablet. I found this information on another blog but feel that the steps could be better explained in order to be more easily understood. BTW, this process should work for all the new Archos gen8 devices which are running Android Froyo. Also, if you haven’t done so already, you will need to upgrade your Archos 101 to Android Froyo by checking for firmware updates. Here’s how I’m going to break down the Google Market install:
- Download the app
- Transfer it to the memory in your Archos 101 tablet
- Run the app
- Reboot the Archos 101
- Login to your Google Account
- Enjoy

Deal of the Day – $400 Netbook/Laptop

- Image by Boyan Yurukov via Flickr
My best results and preference go to Toshiba, Sony, and Acer in that order. The brand isn’t worth more than a $50 premium because they don’t design much more than the case and logo (provided the systems have comparable specs).
That being said, here are my preferred options based on the sales this week:
- Acer $399 – This system is just like mine with a few reductions: 1.3GHz dual-core, 2GB RAM, 250 HDD (mine: 1.5GHz dual-core, 4GB RAM, 320 HDD) However, you could add 2GB RAM in the future (one slot is open). Otherwise there’s not too much difference for the $120 savings.
- Toshiba $449 – This system has a faster CPU (2.2GHz) and includes an optical drive, but it’s also 14″ rather than 11.6″. It’s not quite a netbook but there’s a good deal more power in a slightly larger package.
A couple other things:
- The speed of the HDD (RPM) is most important for gaming and other high speed data access applications. If you need this, the money would be better spent on a faster processor or SSD. Either of which would move you out of the $400 price range.
- Additional memory or a SSD could be nice future upgrades to the Acer I mention above, or the Toshiba (both slots are being used, but you could upgrade it to 8GB and sell the 4GB it comes with).
Hope that helps, post you comments below if you have any questions or other recommendations to share.

Power Cycling

Power cycling has nothing to do with riding your bicycle around the local mall at a brisk pace. Instead, it is a very common practice in electronics and computer troubleshooting which can solve many problems with little effort.

Was your computer system struck by lightning?
Every year lightning storms destroy hundreds of thousands of computers around the world costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Some lightning strikes are rather obvious, like the ones which also destroy the building containing the computers. However, as systems become faster their circuitry becomes smaller, the need for clean power increases. These smaller circuits do not have the physical mass to avoid damage and dissipate the extreme heat and energy that come with extreme power surges such as lightning strikes. This is where wireless devices and surge protectors can earn their keep.

Inside the Archos 101
When I first received my Archos 101, I thought there was a problem with the touchscreen display. (If you’re experiencing this problem as well, save yourself some hassle and simply recalibrate the touchscreen.) Not wanting to return the device if the problem was nothing more than a cable which was not properly installed, I promptly opened the case to re-seat any loose cables. To my surprise, the Archos engineers not only designed a product that is easily modified, they also taped all the cables in place to ensure they do not become unseated easily. It turns out that I only needed to recalibrate the touchscreen and this whole mess could have been avoided. On the other hand, I now know what’s inside my Archos 101 and you’ll find the pictures below to prove it.
